Crane Fly Orchid

Description:

This perennial monocot is relatively common. During the late winter to early spring the plant can be identified by single, green leaf that pop about above the leaf litter. The underside is bright purple, and the leaf is covered with a knobby texture. The leaves disappear in late spring before the plant flowers. In late July - August, a single stalk emerges with a whorl of semi-asymmetrical flowers.

Habitat:

Found primarily in deciduous woodlands of the Eastern United States.

Notes:

Given the less than dramatic colors and underwhelming size, the Crane Fly Orchid can be difficult to spot despite its common nature.
