Grass Whistling Duck

Dendrocygna eytoni

Description:

Also known as grass whislter, plumed tree duck, whistle duck, Eyton's tree duck and others. A beautifully marked duck with brown plumage edged with yellow on back, areas of face, neck and rump lighter buff, chestnut chest and shoulders marked with black bars, lanceolate plumes on sides coloured rich tan edged with black, legs and feet pink, male and female similar. Chicks reddish colouring.

Habitat:

From northern-western Australia across top end and down coast and inland through Queensland, NSW and into Victoria. Rarer the further south of the range. Tropical grasslands, lakes, dams, swamps and areas where grasses are short but also long grasses available.

Thanks Jemma. Their plumage is so beautiful. I enjoy listening to their whistling sound. They also fly at night and although I cannot see them I can hear them calling as they fly over.
