Pukeko and chicks

Porphyrio porphyrio melanotus

Description:

New Zealand swamp hen. This beautiful bird dwells near swampland, a clumsy flyer, it is often seen near roadside ditches or swamps.

Habitat:

Swampland, ditches, wetlands.

Notes:

These wild birds were in the Gisborne Botanical Gardens living in a lilly pad island in the middle of a duck pond. I have never seen them here before, but they were making good use of the bread visitors were feeding the ducks :D
