Gum Leafhopper

Eurypella sp.

Description:

This little hopper was about 6 mm long with a mottled brown head and dark wings.

Habitat:

Spotted on a eucalyptus sapling.

Notes:

There were two hoppers on this young tree and they were tended to by numerous ants. Leafhoppers produce a sugary liquid that are collected by these meat ants. In return, the ants protect the hoppers - a mutualistic relationship.
