Tetraodontidae
The scientific name refers to the four large teeth, fused into an upper and lower plate, which are used for crushing the shells of crustaceans and mollusks, their natural prey.
They are most diverse in the tropics and relatively uncommon in the temperate zone and completely absent from cold waters.

I have never seen puffer fish this big, great pictures... sad that they get beached though.
Agreed, very sad. I have never seen them out of the water like that, they a little like hedgehogs in this picture.

Blogie , these unlucky puffers get caught in fishing nets and when the fishermen overhaul the day's catch to the beach ..they discard these puffers since no one eats puffer fish in kerala ..lucky ones get to water every time waves washes the beach....but when we tried to push them inspite of those spikes ...they would puff up and get washed ashore again and most die...
The poor things! How come they were out of the water?
