American Kestrel (Sparrow Hawk)

Falco sparverius

Description:

This bird is the smallest and most colorful falcon. It has a dark head with a white mask, orange breast, dark upper body and white to gray sides.

Habitat:

Open fields and prairie areas

Notes:

Beautiful small falcon that eats insects and slightly larger oraganisms. Thanks to Patrick and Christy for their help. I originally described the bird as a hawk, which it is not.

Beautiful bird! This one is especially colorful!! It's a falcon, not a hawk though...it is the smallest falcon in North America. Great shots!
