Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel

Callospermophilus lateralis

Description:

Small grayish mammal, ~ 7 in long exclusive of tail, with black and white longitudinal stripes along its sides.

Habitat:

Montane ecosystem of mixed coniferous and deciduous trees, a variety of shrubs and grassy meadows and marshes drained by small streams.

Notes:

Spotted at Rainbow Curve along Trail Ridge Road (images 1 and 2) and on the north side of Bear Lake (image 3) in Rocky Mountain National Park on two days (Sep 22 and 21 respectively). Combined into a single spotting to avoid multiple similar posts.
