Snout Moth

Gauna aegusalis

Description:

A brown and white moth with a wing span of about 30 mm. The moth was seen resting with both fore wings draped stiffly on either side and its thick abdomen curved upwards. Legs were held on either side propping the body high up in the air. The fore wings had pale and deep brown patterns.

Habitat:

Spotted under bright lights.

Notes:

Thanks to Peter Marriott for the ID. The caterpillars of this moth have been seen feeding on rust fungus galls and living inside them ! http://morwellnp.pangaean.net/cgi-bin/sh... Family: Pyralidae
