Cuckoo Bee

Thyreus sp. (histrio??)

Description:

Brilliant blue and black in colour, this restless bee is an insect I had never seen before.

Habitat:

My new neighbour is a gardening enthusiast and has planted shrubs on the road alongside her wall. This bee was on those plants. It was extremely swift and restless...of my 5-6 shots only one was Ok enough to be posted.

Notes:

Thank you, Mark Ridgeway for the ID.

Thanks Mark Ridgway...I think I have spotted the blue banded bee...so no wonder the cuckoo bee came along. It is so humbling that I have now begun to see these insects, birds, life forms....just that I had never looked before...they were always there. Thanks again.

I am not certain of 'histrio' but confident of Thyreus. 'histrio' is the one that is recorded in your area. Interesting to note these bees parasitise Amegilla - the common blue banded bee.
