Golden-mantled ground squirrel

Callospermophilus lateralis

Description:

A sweet-natured rodent that approaches people presumably to acquire food. Someone gave it a raw, in-shell peanut which it quickly stuffed its cheeks with. These squirrels aim to gain weight in the summer ahead of hibernation time in the winter.

Habitat:

Seen at an elevation of 9500 ft in White River National Forest, Colorado, an alpine area of conifers.
