photographing and learning about wildlife
Large mottled brown-beige moth with a design like bad drapery, wingspan ~ 13 cm.
Suburban area on a mesic, tropical, insular lowland plateau.
Every now and then individuals of this species decide to hang out on my sliding screen door, but they are normally very skittish and fly off if I look at them too long. This one was more mellow than normal and didn't budge when I took a backlit picture through the screen (no. 3 of 3 uploaded here) and measured its wingspan. I decided to take a chance and try for a dorsal view. I rigged a long lens to my digital SLR, grabbed a foot stool, went around to the back of my home, climbed the stool to peek over the fence and got pictures 1 and 2.
