Sparshall's Moth Caterpillar

Trichiocercus sparshalli

Description:

Early instars of the caterpillar of the long-tailed bombyx moth. each is a very attractive caterpillar with alternating low-profile black tufts and taller pointed red tufts. The rest of the body was covered with long white hairs.
These two caterpillars were seen beside each other on the one leaf.

Habitat:

Spotted on a eucalyptus tree in a reserve.

The caterpillars develop a long forward-pointing tuft of dark hairs behind the head at a later stage. They live on the leaves of several secies of Eucalyptus. Family: Notodontidae
