Pochote Tree Flowers

Pachira quinata

Description:

These are the flowers of the Pochote tree. The first is the flower which is freshly fallen. The second is dry and has turned orange. It is lovely to see when all the flowers have dried and left behind an orange carpet. They are really quite large at about 3.5" across. The Pochote is an indiginous tree here. I have seen very large Pochotes which easily measure 5' wide. They grow about 60 feet tall. They are covered in thorns.

Habitat:

Tropical dry forest in NW Costa Rica half way through the six month dry season.
