Sugar Lerp -1

Glycaspis sp

Description:

A small square shaped lerp on the upper side of a gum (eucalyptus) leaf. It had raised middle part which looked fluffy. The base was made of tightly curled white crystalline material. Pics #2 and 3 show an ant attending to the lerp

Habitat:

Eucalyptus trees

Notes:

Nymphs of plant lice or Psyllids excrete honeydew (containing sugars and aminoacids) on leaf surfaces. The honeydew hardens when in contact with air and the nymphs shelter under the hard covers. These rd covers are called lerps - they have different appearances depending on the type of psyllid that makes them. This one is from the Glycaspis sp and is a sugar lerp. http://www.brisbaneinsects.com/brisbane_...
