Cynanthus latirostris
Red beak, green body with some white feathers in the tail.. About 12 cm (beak to tail). It lives in my backyard.
Thank you Bayucca, let me get some better photos of the hummingbird for you so we can have a closer look and see the true colors in better light.
I have too much respect to the knowledge of Liam but I am still confused about the brownish tail. I agree that colors may change due to backlight and angulation, but I am not sure the way like this. Brown is usually not changing in some kind of gray. And as I wrote in my first comment, I am not happy with this kind of blue. But since it is not my spot I leave the decision to the spotter ;-)...
To Liam and Bayucca: I appreciate your interest in the classification of the hummingbird. The photos are not very good due to low light and backlight. I´ll try to take better pictures when we have a sunny day, which has not been the case in recent days. But I have to agree with Liam classification. Thank you both.
In poor lighting, the tail can appear brown. With the bright red bill and blue breast, it's more likely to be a Broad-billed.
OK, Liam, I agree with your description, but how do you explain the brown feathers in #4? Latirostris has in my eyes no brown tail.
In the meanwhile I think it actually is Amazilia tzacatl. They have some blue, depending on the light angle.
I am looking into it, but not shure yet, I´ll try to get a better picture with less back light. Thank you Bayucca
I am not 100% sure, but it looks like Amazilia tzacatl, Rufous-tailed Hummingbird. Look at #4 with brown feathers. But I don't like the blue glim on the chest. Red/black beak would be fine for Tzacatl. What do you think??
