Antarctic Beech (approx. 3000 yrs old)

Description:

Antarctic Beech trees - upwards of 3000 years old (depending on the source). These trees are ancient relics of Gondwana, and are protected within the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area.

Habitat:

Cool temperate rainforests between altitudes 500m to 1500m. It occurs in wet, fire free areas at high altitude in eastern Australia.

I recognise these beauties, Pam. They are magical, and I think there's an energy to them that's almost tangible. I'm so glad you got to see them, and I'll bet that when you see them in other photos, you'll remember them as old friends. Your photos have captured the warmth of a lush green rainforest environment so perfectly, whereas the mist in my pics gives a hint of a colder southern climate and of altitude. It's no wonder this is a world heritage area.
