Flavoparmelia caperata
Lichen Field Notes We actually found many different types of lichen on the trees and rocks. The temperature was 3ºC but the wind chill was awful and made the temperature feel about 3 degrees below zero. The wind speed was 28.968192 kph with gusts up to 41.842944 kph. They ranged from puffy and fuzzy to crunchy and flat. The lichen I am identifying was on the same tree as a different one, but farther down. It was flat against the tree and crunched under the fingertips. It was maybe 5 centimeters wide. The lichen was flat and light green, but not like a pigmentation of green. More like mildly colored, therefore giving the appearance of lichen. It appeared to be almost flaky, like a pastry, with little fish scale-like layers. It was crunchy like an over-baked potato chip.(Obviously I didn’t eat it. That would be fairly gross.) This lichens thallus was foliose, which means that it has a crunchy and leaf like shape.
It was found on the bark of a tree. It was Winter. There was snow on the ground and the wind and air were very, very cold.
