Buteo lineatus
Beautiful red chest and fairly large bird. I tried to keep the deer out of the pictures as much as possible because it was in a state of deterioration and caked with mud and not a pleasant part of the picture, but I have to keep it real here. I had a hard time trying to figure which picture to use as the lead. He/she was a great model - not intimidated by me at all. These birds usually go after live prey. Not sure why this guy decided to dine on carrion. He/she looked healthy enough.
Driving down a very fast moving road, I spotted a group of turkey buzzards feasting on a deer carcass. I wanted to stop, but I just thought I'd catch them on the way back. When I made my way back about 30 minutes later, there was only one bird picking at the poor deer and it wasn't black. After u-turning and pulling over, this guy wasn't the least bit concerned with me - I even got out of my car and he didn't fly away. I looked up and buzzards were on the power lines and in the trees, but well away from this guy.

Great series! By the comparative size I would lean toward this being a female. Quite a light color morph, too... great color!
Thanks Rachael!
