Green-barred woodpeckers

Colaptes melanochloros

Description:

The Green-barred woodpecker lives both on the ground as in trees. The tail feathers are quite strong, which allow the bird to use it as a support when its clawed against a tree. It has a very long tongue, which can retract and wrap around the skull and helps absorb the extremely high g-forces their heads and brains suffer from striking wood and other hard materials. The scientific name melanochloros derives from the Greek melanos, meaning "black", and chloros, "pale green", the principal colors of this bird.

Habitat:

It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests and subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.
