House finch

Carpodacus mexicanus

Description:

This pretty house finch posed so nicely for this spotting. Resembles the purple finch but the house finch is slimmer and has a longer square-tipped tail. Has dark streaks on sides and belly. The male's breast, forehead, stripe over the eye and rump vary from orange to red. Likes to visit bird feeders. This little bird also suffers from a fatal eye disease that causes the eyes to crust over.

Habitat:

The house finch was spotted on a wire fence at Kinder Farm park and other house finches have been spotted on my bird feeder in back yard.
