Crested barbet

Trachyphonus vaillantii

Description:

Colorful bird with yellow and red breast. On back: black feathers with white edging. Male makes a trilling sound like an alarm clock "trrrrrrrrr" to which the female responds with "puta-puta-puta".

Habitat:

Broad-leaved woodlands and suburban gardens.

Notes:

I never tire of seeing this beautiful bird. Had a male and female on my neighbour's roof singing their duet shortly before a thunderstorm.
