Eastern Gray Squirrel Black Phase

Sciurus carolinensis

Description:

Black phase of the Gray Squirrel is more common in central Ontario than the gray phase. Throughout the entire range of the Gray Squirrel, melanistic squirrels (including the black colour phase) live primarily where there is snow in winter.

Habitat:

Cedar stand next to a large marsh.
