Spurge nettle

Description:

Also known as Bull-nettle or Tread-Softly. This plant is a perennial that grows up to 3 feet tall and is covered with tiny, stinging hairs. Not a true Nettle (genus Urtica), this plant is a member of the Euphorbiaceae, or Spurge family.

Habitat:

Spotted in Violet Cury Nature Preserve. Pine Flatwoods, along hiking trail. Dry, sandy/scrubby area. Native to Southeastern United States.

Notes:

The underground tubers are edible, but the rest of the plant is toxic. Stinging hairs that cover the plant can cause a reddish rash and painful, stinging sensation if they are touched, lasting up to an hour.
