Sooty Oystercatcher

Haematopus fuliginosus

Description:

Two of these (a pair?) were picking small shellfish from intertidal rock pools while the tide was low. I guess there were no oysters around. I had read about these but never seen them before. Striking beak and eye colour. About 50cm long.

Habitat:

On exposed rocky shelves at low tide in a small nature reserve.

Notes:

John Gould first described this bird in 1845.

Thanks Pam. Yes more of an arty shot with fuzziness included :) At least it's a new one for me.

that'a good Mark. You've got it in action, and I like the reflection in the water !
