American Carrion Beetle

Necrophila americana

Description:

Distinctive black beetle with yellow protonum and a dark squarish spot in the middle. Textured elytra. Feeds on maggots found on dead animals as well as some of the carcass. This beetle was on the side of a dirt trail with no obvious carcasses around.

Habitat:

Temperate forest. Rockwood Park, Virginia.
