Questionmark

Polygonia interrogationis

Description:

The Question Mark is a North American nymphalid butterfly. They live in wooded areas and city parks, or generally in areas which feature trees and free spaces. The adult butterfly has a wingspan of 1.8–3.0 in. "The silver mark on the underside of the hindwing is broken into two parts, a curved line and a dot, creating a ?-shaped mark that gives the species its common name.

Habitat:

Woods.

Notes:

There were half a dozen of these guys flitting around the tree canopy 20' above my head resting very occasionally for a few second high on the tree trunks. I stayed rooted to the spot for almost half an hour in the hope that one would rest close enough to photograph, & just as I was about to give up this one landed right in front of my feet! It's so lovely to see butterflies again - especially when they are shiny & new like this one!
