Zebra Jumper

Salticus scenicus

Description:

The female has a body length of about 4-6.5 mm with a legspan of 6-8mm. Males are smaller. Unmistakable for any other jumping spider in our area with its bold stripes. Large eyes give these hunters good vision for spiders.

Habitat:

Often found on rocks, buildings and trees.

Notes:

The large eyes give these spiders relatively good vision out to about one meter. This spider actively watched me and on two occasions jumped onto my lens as I was photographing it. A bit scary to see through the viewfinder when it happened. Spiders typically give me the creeps, but I've always found the jumping spiders to have personality and those big eyes a curiously human appearance....

It did. I've had other jumping spiders do that so I was kind of expecting this one to do it. Still, when it happened, it really gave me a start! Grin.....

That must have been a surprise indeed when it jumped onto the lens!
