Chital Deer

Axis axis

Description:

A Chital Deer seen feeding on a shredded Antler of another Chital Deer. It is noted that they eat the antlers that they shed for their rich nutrients. As per IUCN website: Antler and bone chewing is common in spotted deer. All age and sex classes eat the antlers, but such feeding was more common in velvet-antlered males, doubtless reflecting mineral needs during antler growth and mineralisation.

Habitat:

Seen at a protected wildlife sanctuary.
