A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Nymphalis californic
Upperside is orange-brown with large black spots and dark wing borders. Underside looks like a dead leaf and is dark mottled brown with darker wing bases.
Spotted in the Cascade mountains near the emergency shelter at Government Meadows - above 4000 ft.
This must be one of the population explosion years that they cycle - they were everywhere.

Someone else told me I should do a night hike - I guess I'll have to do it when I find a good place to go. Thanks for commenting Hema.
I have not seen this yet .I did see some stuff that I had been searching for a while .Like the aquatic garter snake ,tussock moth etc. This time I took a course in migratory birds. I was simply delited to discover the neotropical migrants My desk top is still not replaced .So it will be a while before I upload more .I did see the Potoo bird in Costa rica. On a recent night hike ,I saw the glow in the dark scorpions on Mt Diablo. We were actually looking for the "Poor Will" We heard him but did not see them. Night hikes are magical and you must try guided ones offered by the parks .Mt Diablo surely is magical!
