Synoeca Wasp

Synoeca septentrionalis

Description:

This is one of the areas largest paper wasp. They are highly protective. They measure about 1.5" long. I can tell you from experience that when they sting they draw blood each time. They are also one of the loveliest wasps in the area! Spotted at a drying creek bed drinking water

Habitat:

Tropical dry forest in NW Costa Rica 4 months into the 6 month dry season

Quite a aggressive wasp with a very nasty sting!! Synoeca sp., might be Synoeca septentrionalis, but I am not sure about the species:

One of the key issues for Synoeca would be the red jaws.
