Ornate tree lizard

Urosaurus ornatus

Description:

A small (up to 2.3"), gray, tan, or brown lizard with dark gray or brown markings that usually consist of paired, short, and irregularly-shaped crossbars. Some are unmarked, or have broken stripes or dashes down the length of the back. Males have a blue patch on each side of the belly and a blue, blue-green, yellow, or orange throat. Females lack belly patches and have a yellow, yellow-green, or orange throat. The top of the head is usually adorned with an ornate pattern of thin dark lines. There are two parallel strips of enlarged, keeled scales that run down the back, separated at the midline by a strip of small granular scales. Eats insects and spiders. (from "A Field Guide to Amphibians and Reptiles in Arizona")

Notes:

This specimen is a female and has a regenerated tail.
