Pollen Beetle

Dicranolaius bellulus

Description:

A small beetle about 8 mm long with a black head, shiny red thorax and dark metallic elytra with red bands. Antennae showed an interesting feature -they had a swelling near the basal region (3rd segment) suggesting that this is a male beetle.

Habitat:

Spotted in a sururban garden.

Notes:

These beetles are partly predatory feeding on eggs, larvae and slow-moving insects. They also feed on pollen on certain plants. Family: Melyridae Also known as Red and Blue Beetle http://www.flickr.com/photos/bronking/42...
