Army Ant

Description:

The scouts in picture #1, #2 are about 5mm in length, while the soldiers (picture #3) were at least twice that. A resident species of small black ants was trying to fend off arriving army ant scouts, but once the huge soldiers arrived on the scene, they had to make way.

Habitat:

Tropical rainforest in the Ecuadorian Amazon region.
