thanks oxyjack and martinl! it really is a jewel bug/ scutellerid! But it is really hard to pinpoint which exact species it is. they look gorgeous though :)

That is one gorgeous Scutellerid. Our California species are so dull in comparison.

This is a hemipteran (true bug) from the family Scutelleridae. The wings are covered by a single shield called a scutellum. Called a sheild backed, or jewel bug, it is similar to but not quite like this one http://www.brisbaneinsects.com/brisbane_...
