Haliaeetus leucogaster
Large bird with white belly (as named!) and dark wings.
I spotted it from a private beach on Havelock Island and folowed it in flight with my eyes...and with a fervent prayer that it sit a bit...it did for a moment. 2 shots. This one is the passable one.

Here's a spotting of a Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle. It's a subspecies of the mainland eagle, and critically endangered (only 200 breeding pairs) http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/337... You can see where the name comes from. The wedged tail is really easy to spot even when they are soaring high, which they usually are.

Bird lover :)
I have seen the Oriental Honey Buzzard and the Shikras etc., but an Eagle!!! Lucky you. I am yet to see the ones you have named. Perhaps some day.
Eagles are alway a "wow" spotting. I've seen Golden, Bald, and Wedge-tailed eagles in addition to the White-bellied. The Bald was probably the most amazing. They are huge. We have Albatross here in Tasmania as well. Just amazing birds. Unbelievably wide wings. But it was probable the Whopping crane was the most awe inspiring to see fly over head. I'm really a "bird person". Can you tell?
lori.tas Thanks. I could not believe my eyes. This is my FIRST eagle spotting in the wild.
Well spotted Sukanya. We see them frequently down here in Tasmania. Usually just on the wing, but one time I was really lucky and spotted one sitting in a tree while we were boating on the Pieman river. It just sat there and let our boat drift under it. Magical moment. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/277...
