Swainson's Hawk

Buteo swainsoni

Description:

There are both light and dark morphs of this hawk. The light morph (pictured) are white below with a red/brown bib on the chest. Throat is white. The tail is grayish/brown with several dark bands. The bird's above is a patterned brown.

Habitat:

Grasslands throughout western North America.

Notes:

I found this bird perched on a fence post next to the road in Kansas' Flint Hills.

nice spotting! One of my favorite hawks... I admire their endurance and complete change of diet when living in Argentina. Pestacides nearly wiped them out down there... I'm glad we their population is growing so we can still see them up here in America!
