Eristalinus punctulatus
A striking fly with a slightly flattened abdomen with black and yellow patterns. The thorax had four black stripes. Eyes were large, a creamy yellow with small red flecks. The separated eyes indicate that this fly is a female. Males do not have a noticeable separation. The fly looked very much like a large hover fly.
Spotted in a small reserve. br>

Larvae of these flies develop in stagnant water and have short siphon-like tails that help them breathe in oxygen-deprived water. They are therefore called rat-tailed maggots
