Oncorhynchus nerka
These fish may grow to 84 cm (33 in) in length and weigh up to 7 kg (15 lbs.). Males develop a large hooked nose during breeding. Silvery much of the year, sockeyes turn a brilliant red with a green head during breeding.
Sockeyes roam the northern Pacific Ocean but enter freshwater streams in Russia, United States, Canada, and Japan for spawning. Unlike other salmon species that spawn in moving water, sockeyes spawn in lakes.
I photographed these fish at Babine Lake, British Columbia.
