Black-necked Stilt or Ae'o

Himantopus mexicanus knudseni

Description:

A tall wading bird, the black extends noticeably farther around the sides of the neck and lower on the face than in North American race. Bill is long, thin and black, legs are long thin and pink.

Habitat:

Nesting was observed but not photographed at Hamakua Marsh on Oahu in May, 2011. Adults feign injury to distract potential predators from the nest.

Notes:

Perfectly adapted to its habitat with its long legs for wading and long pointed beak for searching out delictable edibles in the sand!

Thanks Audrey. The best place to see the Hawaiian Stilt is in the brackish lagoons between the Marriott Hotel and the ocean at "A" Beach in Waikoloa Beach Resort. This is all public land and I have seen them there several times just before dusk.
