Two-spined Stick Insect

Description:

This beautiful phasmid looks a little different from the "usual" stick insects by its light brown/cream coloured top thorax and forewings, which produce the two spines that give the animal its name; this light colour continues on to the back wings, where it becomes a mottled pattern; the lower legs are also lighter in colour, whereas the remaining animal is dark grey. It looks quite conspicuous on a green leaf, but is very well camouflaged among leaf litter.

Habitat:

Amazon rainforest at about 700m above sea level, in Ecuador.
