Swainson's Hawk

Buteo swainsoni

Description:

There are both light and dark morphs of this hawk. The light morph (pictured) are white below with a red/brown bib on the chest. Throat is white. The tail is grayish/brown with several dark bands. The bird's above is a patterned brown.

Habitat:

Grasslands throughout western North America.

Notes:

I found this bird near Devils Lake, North Dakota. It had just captured a bird, maybe a starling, and was sitting on this hay bale devouring it.

Ha! My identification skills are being affirmed after my redtailed mistake and I'm once again grinning....

Thanks all for your confirmation of this ID.

Another gorgeous shot, Gordon! This is a Swainson's Hawk - they should be migrating back here in about a month...these are one of my favorites!
