Chiloglottis valida
A cluster of purple bird orchids grow singly on short stems from a plant with only two leaves. The labellum (tongue) has structures (calli) projecting upwards to entice a wasp to enter, the labellum will flick upwards pushing the wasp into pollen structures above. What a bizarre and tricky plant!! Check here for a more detailed description. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/933...
Found in Baluk William Flora Reserve.
This visit was on the inspiration of Mark and Leuba who visited here recently. This reserve is popular for orchids and I spotted nine species of orchid here this morning.
