Ghost Plant

Monotropa uniflora

Description:

Also known as Indian Pipe or Corpse Plant, this interesting plant is one of the few types that contain no chlorophyll. The Ghost Plant is very specialized. It lives by feeding on fungi that grow on the roots of some trees (it is parasitic). Since this plant requires no sunlight to survive, it can be found growing on darker places like dense forest. It is often mistaken for a type of fungi due to its unusual appearance.

Habitat:

Temperate forest. Connetquot River State Park, New York.
