Dark Fishing Spider

Dolomedes tenebrosus

Description:

Large brown and black spider. The largest in the state of Michigan.

Habitat:

Found on the outside if a local nature center building. The nature center is surrounded by woods and next to a river. It's quite normal to find these spiders clinging to the brick, just under the room's overhang.

Notes:

Frequently mistaken for a “wolf spider” (members of family Lycosidae), but the eye arrangements are vastly different.
