Blue Spiny Lizard

Sceloporus serrifer

Description:

Striking lizard measuring around 20cm including the tail. Cryptic colouration in shades of brown and grey, with a distinct black collar fringed by pale lines. No blue throat can be seen, which should make this a female. Scales are ridged and pointy, giving the lizard a spiny appearance (and name).

Habitat:

Montane forest at about 2400m above sea level, near the Sierra Gorda in central Mexico.

Notes:

These lizards were plentiful among the rocks at Las Ranas ruins.
