Cunner

Tautogolabrus adspersus

Description:

I have caught many of these small fish in my trap. They have about 15 rays on their spiny dorsal fin, which continues without a gap to the soft dorsal fin. at the front of the soft dorsal fin there was a black spot. Most of the fish I caught were creamy white below with rusty brown above, but one of the fish I caught was almost blue. Maybe this was a male? I thought these fish were cool because they had a small mouth with lots of small teeth in front like a parrot fish.

Habitat:

Inlet off the Atlantic shore. About twelve feet off shore. Trap was set under a wharf in about seven feet of water. Bottom was sandy with large rocks and metal debris.

Notes:

They were very aggressive; chasing off other fish to get the bait.
