Thread-waisted Wasp

Eremnophila aureonotata

Description:

The blue-black body and silver/gray patches on the thorax distinguish E. aureonotata from other species. These are ground nesting wasps & the nests are provisioned with caterpillars of Noctuidae, Notodontidae (especially), Sphingidae and skippers (Hesperidae).

Habitat:

Eastern North America west to Texas, Central America. Fields often near deciduous woods.

Notes:

Observed on Pink Tickseed (Coreopsis rosea).
