A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Chtysaora quinquecirrha
These were all over at Port Aransas (Gulf of Mexico) and the water was actually very clear. The clearest I've ever seen it. These have very long tentacles used to paralyze and capture prey. These jellyfish also cause painful and annoying stings. Interesting: At lower salinities, they are white in color and where salinities are higher, they often have reddish marking along the central tentacles and swimming bell. Its mouth is located at the center of one end of the body, which opens to a gastrovascular cavity that is used for digestion. It has tentacles that surround the mouth to capture food. Very interesting reading on the two resource sites I listed under 'references' and 'notes'.
Open ocean. Range Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Florida, Texas, New England.

Thank you Hema Shah and Mark Ridgeway! To Mark Ridgeway: PN has grown! It seems at one time everyone got lots of comments. Now I miss so much. I try to go back and look at other's pics and comment (to me it's encouraging) but there are so many now.
