Green Elfcup

Chlorociboria aeruginascens

Description:

Fruitbodies were growing from a rotten stick on the woodland floor under ash, birch and a v.small hawthorn. Other trees in the woodland were beech and I think Goat willow. The muhrooms were up to about 10mm across with one possibly bigger. Chlorociboria sp. are used as a 'spalting' fungus to naturally stain the wood a turquoise colour seen in the second photo. The wood is then used as inlay as in Tunbridge Ware. To distinguish C. aeruginascens from C. aeruginosa microscopic analysis is a more certain method than macroscopic observation. first-nature.co.uk describes C. aeruginascens as being slightly larger and much more common than C. aeruginosa http://www.first-nature.com/fungi/chloro... Collins complete guide to British mushrooms and toadstools lists the fungus in the top 100 (most common?) species in the UK

Notes:

hc12, I have a sample
