Velvet Shank

Flammulina velutipes

Description:

Growing in dense and tight clusters, this is a stump-rotting fungus, golden-orange in colour. The convex cap appears slimy when humidity increases. It reaches up to 10cm in height, and about 5 in diameter. Stipe is lighter brown close to the cap, velvety darker brown closer to the base.

Habitat:

Found on a fallen tree in oak forest in Geneva lake valley.

Notes:

My mushroom identification suffers from a lack of experience (and I welcome corrections), but if my ID is correct this is a highly appreciated edible mushroom, also known as Enokitake - apparently, it has some medicinal value as well.
